If a Tater blogs in the forest and no one is there…

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011
Is this thing still here? I just realized it’s been a scant SEVEN MONTHS since I posted on here, so that’s gotta change!

A lot going on for the last 4 or 5 months, including lots of shows, a change in job stuff, a bit of a shake up in the band membership, the appearance of crop circles on my front lawn – just lots of things! So, going to try and get back to posting here. Yep. We’ll see, won’t we!

I’m also hoping to redo the website this year to bring it more in line with what we’d LIKE it to be like. I’ve been using a template for the past year from Hostbaby, and while they are a GREAT company, the template is a bit limiting for me. I just didn’t have time to do a lot of manual content management last year, so I went with the template thinking I’d save myself some time. But I’m less than happy with some of the constraints of the template – for instance, I can’t just add a new page to the site; there are a set number of pages and I can only use what they have. Whine, whine, whine… Anyway, if I can find someone to help with it I’d love it, but otherwise I’ll be making a stab on my own and living with the results!

One thing that is a holy grail for me is the ability to TRULY maintain one calendar and use it throughout the web. So far I have a minimum of 3 that I have to remember to update; the website itself, the Reverbnation calendar, which is linked to our mailing list (and which provides some neat little widgets that I can use on other sites, like the calendar on this blog!) and the necessary but annoying Facebook events.  And that’s not even counting the Twitter feed, which I don’t use so far for calendar stuff.  If I could ever figure out how to get the information I need out there in one place I’d be a happy little spud! I’m also looking at some other options for the mailing list. I like the one that Reverbnation uses (FanReach) but the interface for it is very limited, and the multilevel signup processes has stumped a lot of people. I dread the drop-offs that will come when I change again, but I keep hoping for the perfect solution!

On the MUSIC side of things (that’s why we’re out there in the first place!) we are working on several new things, and I’ll let you know about those when I know more. The Squeeze tribute CD is hopefully going to come out this year, and our cut of “Goodbye Girl” should be on there. We’re talking about a possible video to accompany that release, as well as other video ideas – anyone want to volunteer to work with us on that? We have some ideas but no one in the band has any real seat time as an editor, or even much on the camera side! If you have ideas or would like to be involved, let us know!

There are also various side projects that we’ve been involved with. A lot of Taterheads in the Richmond, VA area are familiar with the Rock & Roll Jubilee that Brad & I have been involved for the last year and a half. It’s a tribute to the early days of music, when it really did roll! We do our best to recreate the music of Elvis, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Ricky Nelson, and the Everly Brothers. The show includes Tater pals Jim Wark on guitar, Brian Sulser on bass, and our old alumnus George Garrett on drums. BJ Kocen, a long-standing force in the Tater orbit plays radio manager Radio Ray Cadbury for WJKS, “Where Joy Kills Sorrow”, and the whole show is done in the style of a 50’s live radio broadcast. We’re having a blast with it, and have started rehearsals for another installment coming in February. If you’re in the area, come out and see it; if not, you can see some videos of past shows on our YouTuber channel – just look for the “Rock & Roll Jubilee playlists.

OK, more to come! I’m just sure of it…

This time for sure…

(But that trick never works!) Well, we’ll see. We were finally able to record the coast-to-coast CD release party for menagerie this past Saturday, and it should be broadcast this coming Saturday, Feb 27 on Mike Lidskin’s TWIRL radio in Sacramento, CA. We tried doing the broadcast live over a Skype connection, but had some drops on Mike’s end, so fortunately he recorded the whole show and will re-broadcast in its entirety this weekend. The Taters have basically the whole show, which will be Mike playing lots of cuts from the CD, interspersed with live performances and interviews with the band.  We all gathered around the mic in the Fabulous Zebra Room here in Richmond last weekend, with a full party going on in the next room, and Mike & Amber had guests on their end as well. You can tune in via the web at the TWIRL radio site this coming Saturday and find out!  The show broadcasts at 4pm Pacific, 7pm Eastern time.

In the meantime, there are several cuts from the live portion of the show over at our YouTuber site. Here’s one example:

We’ll call this a tribute to that other band that all played around the mic just a scant 45 years ago (yipes!). There’s also a pretty fun medley of Roger Miller songs, but I’ll have to hear the show this week to remember why that was happening!

Coast-to-coast CD release rescheduled

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

If all goes well, we’re planning to try again for the coast-to-coast hook-up on Sat, Feb 20. The show airs at 4pm Pacific time, and 7pm Eastern. For the rest of the world, I’m sure Google will help you figure it out. The show will stream over the TWIRL Radio site, so you can listen live, no matter where you be, and Mike may be planning on recording and podcasting it as well. The “plan” is to setup a Skype connection on both ends, and we’ll play some songs live during our party on our end, Mike will have the live feed, as well as the CD cuts he’ll play on his end. Who knows – maybe it’ll all work out?

Strange but true!

Also, a plug for Mike’s other show on Recharged Radio. He’s played Tater cuts there as well, so go check that out

In the studio

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Just finished listening to Jim’s guitar part on “Feet Start Walking”, and it’s great. Right now suffering thru listening to Bill solo my bass & piano bits to get them all EQ’d nicely… sure sounds better when the rest of band is around it! Ah well, that’s the beauty of the studio – I can play just like me, and Bill can make me sound just like I do in my head (which is always better!).

Overall I’m loving what everyone has come out with on this. There’s been a lot of work done by everyone, and I hope it shows.

or, sounds, I guess…

We’ve had dozens of shows over the last few months, and that’s kept us out of the studio quite a lot, but I’m hoping we’re nearly wrapped up on this. 4 shows this weekend, including a very fun “Christmas in July” day to help raise money and awareness for the Central Virginia Food Bank. We got to play a whole evening of Christmas tunes, in the middle of summer. Ho ho ho! We also got to do this with our pals from Offering, so we had the benefit of Jeanine’s beautiful voice and a whole stage of very talented players – even strings & flute, so we were truly culture filled! These folks did a beautiful job on the music, and with organizing the whole thing. Chris had a relaxing 15 hour day of setting up & running the stage sound, so I know he was wiped out by the end of it! A big Tater thanks, though, for all his hard work. Mike came down from Stafford to help out for the evening, we even pressed Cole into service, and everyone’s help was needed and appreciated. The event was by all accounts a big success, and I think the Food Bank got lots of donations and exposure.

OK, back to work. I’ll try to post some of the results of the mix later this week

Just a short posting to mention that Brad & I will be on Mike Lidskin’s TWIRL radio show via telephone this evening to Sacramento. The show airs at 4pm Pacific, and 7pm Eastern time. We will probably be on sometime in the first hour, but we’re never sure on that one. If there’s time, we hope to debut a few rough cuts from the new CD, so tune in!

Tune in live at http://www.twirlradio.com/index.php. Just click the Magic Twirl Button on Mike’s site to hear the live stream.
