The Taters - menagerie

A decade since our first release, and a lot of miles under the old Tater van taught us lots about writing, recording and performing, and we hope it shows in this project. Features favourites from our concerts, including Such a Good Day, Spend a Little Time With Me, Walking in the Sunshine, Cat in the Window and more.
Start with the first track of the aptly named "Menagerie" and let it roll for a phenomenal listening experience. This album has it all in a nice mix of originals and covers that are sure to leave you with a smile... The musicianship on here is just superb, including some horns, a mandolin, a banjo, and probably some other things I can't identify! Craig Evans (who sounds a lot like Roy Orbison or Raul Malo or Elvis) and Brad Tucker have a magical blend and harmonies that simply have to be heard. In short, if you like your music uncomplicated, pure and sure to stick with you, try out Menagerie. You won't be disappointed. Customer review, Amazon.com

Running faster than lightning, Kicking cans at my feet
Sun is out, I'm ready to play
Skippin' over the sidewalk, Not a cloud in the sky
Better move, I'm on my way

Several hundred people telling me
"You're outta your mind"
Sorry, but it seemed like such a good day
Am I really out of line?
Seemed like such a good day, oh
Such a good day, oh, Such a good day, oh
Such a good day...

Sailing high on the ocean, With my face in the wind
Moving down the waterway
Blowing waves at the world now, Swimmers caught in the wake
Body surfers, bombs away!

In this world a change is coming every day
You gotta move and walk along the narrow way
But in this world when I think about you
Do I plan on changing without you?
No I, no I, no I, no I don't

Around the world, there's people who are just like U
They see a light, so afraid it might be true
But as I walk this road winding home
Do I want to go all alone?
No I, no I, no I, no I don't

No I, no I, No I, no I, No I, No I don't
No I, no I, No I, no I don't

So take a look and see just what you've got to lose
But if it's a choice you want,
Remember that you've got to choose
And if you think I plan on escaping
And missing the chance that we're taking
No I, no I, no I, no I don't

You can't see the future, you can't forget your past
You can't believe that anything this good could ever last
Well I don't have an answer to everything you ask
But meanwhile, baby
Spend a little time with me

Well you think that you'll find sorrow wherever this will lead
And you're sure whatever road you take is trouble guaranteed
But the path you never follow might just be the one you need
So while you're walking
Spend a little time with me

I was here before you saw me
I was looking out for you
I was waiting to adore you
Even if you never knew

You didn't plan for this and neither, girl, did I
But if you need an answer to all those years of "Why"
Don't give up before we start, give love some room to breathe
Take a chance
Spend a little time with me
What's your hurry? Spend a little time with me
Slip your shoes off Spend a little time with me

I believe that we've got lines that bind us
Though we are oceans apart
When you're calling with your heart
I hear it and I start
Calling to you

Though I know how hard and slow the time is
While we are oceans apart
I can hold you in my heart
We won't be pulled apart
I'll hold on to you

Someday you and I will find each other
Don't know how long it will be
When you call across the sea
Then we'll no longer be
Oceans apart

His friends told him try to enjoy the time off
Do the things you never could do
Don't crawl into the arms of the first one
Who comes chasing after you
And he knew they were right, he needed time to think
Time just to be on his own
But you might as well deny a dying man drink
As to tell him to be alone

Not when you're lonely like that
Not when you're lonely like that
It's not what you want
But you're not letting go
Not when you're lonely like that

Maybe he'll find him a girl with a heart
Who's not just along for the ride
But I doubt it would matter, at least not to him
He couldn't back out if he tried
So don't look for reasons, they won't change a thing
You can't talk him out of his pain
The corner he's in's painted black as a cloud
And he'll just do it over and over again...

Not when you're lonely like that
Not when you're lonely like that
It's hard to believe
but you're not gonna leave
Not when you're lonely like that

There was a time in his life
When he got things done
when his passion would carry him through
But he taught himself somewhere to wait for the girl
And now he believes for all of the world
That without her there's nothing he can do

So please try to help him and don't be too hard
He might come around in the end
Just try to be patient, he would if he could
But he doesn't know where to begin...

Not when you're lonely like that
Not when you're lonely like that
He would if he could
but it's really no good
Not when you're lonely like that

I was coming home from work when I saw you in the window
I forgot that was where you lived
I didn't want to stand there
I couldn't let you see me

In the bushes right away, in my head I felt a burning
I forgot he was there with you
The years they started closing
The time had left my mind

I forgot all those times I tried to call you
I forgot that you ever left at all
I forgot all those things that time can change
I forgot that you ever changed your name

When you're down and alone
And you need someone to call your own
That's me
That's me
That's me

If you're lost, out of time,
And you need someone to walk that line
That's me
That's me
That's me

When you look on the ground
And you worry there's no one around
You'll see
That's me
That's me

When you start to find
The first one on your line
Is still the last one on your mind
That's me
That's me
That's me

When you wake up late night & find
The lights all gone
Then suddenly you'll see
That's me
That's me
That's me

Gary & I wrote this song years ago, I think right after seeing "American Werewolf in London" for the first time. We were taken by the parts where the dead kid kept coming back and trying to warn his friend before it was too late, but his friend didn't seem to "get" it!
In 2009, this song was used in the independent film "Virginia Creepers", available here.
BONUS! When we first recorded the track, we included a few soundclips from a few masters of horror. These had to come out when the song went for the film soundtrack, but here is the unedited version!

Late at night I saw him He was running from the edge of the town, (oh no!)
Never turning back He was running really close to the ground, (oh no!)
Looking kinda different He was holding something under his arm, (oh no!)
Then he saw me watching and screamed, A heart alive with alarm, (oh no!)

Wolfman told me tonight, please stay close to the light
I was laughing, but he was shaking out loud (so loud!)
Wolfman told me tonight, please don't beg for a bite
Wolfman told me, wolfman told me, Wolfman told me tonight

Standing in a playground, I saw a little boy in a scuff, (so rough!)
All the kids around him He was looking terrifyingly tough, (so rough!)
When I went to ask him How he got to be a terror so you, (so young!)
Felt a little scary I was staring at the blood on his tongue, (so young!)

Wolfman told me tonight, please stay close to the light
I was laughing, but he was shaking out loud (so loud!)
Wolfman told me tonight, please don't beg for a bite
Wolfman told me, wolfman told me, Wolfman told me tonight

I can still remember when he was just a little cub
His parents used to worry But they really didn't know the rub
They don't know how it happened Exactly when th change took place
But the doctors all agreed It certainly was a special case

Better get a' going 'cause I thought I heard him out on the prowl (oh no!)
Standing in a footstep, I was shaken by the sound of a howl (oh no!)
Heading for a house on the hill, I saw a light on inside (oh no!)
Thought I'd try and make it but he's gaining With an eye on my hide (oh no!)

Up early every morning & out the door by 8
With a future in the making, there are things that cannot wait
She's worked so hard & made it on her own
But she wants so bad to settle down & find herself a home

With a cat in the window & a light at the door
And a past full of pictures in a book on the floor
And a shelf in the hallway she shows to her friends
Of the things that she's made & the places she's been

Taxi to the airport & a plane to sandy shores
With a hundred people waiting, not a man could ask for more
She's untouchable, out lying in the sun
But the things she's really reaching for are never in demand

Now the drinks have all been finished & the dinner's getting cold
With the guest of honor late and not a ticket left unsold
But the paperboys will know the truth today
It was found in some old notebook, a movie on the way

I'll leave my chums out on the run, I'll jump straight from the tree
Don't want to go out dancing slow, I want you home with me
Can't you see?
There's so much we can do at home

Let's turn to six, the monster flicks, Our fill of creature kicks
We're free tonight, turn out the light,
I'm bracing for a fright
We'll get a chill
A double shot of hometown thrills

No need to be out on the sleeve
We're wasting time, I want to leave

That time alone
No telephone
We're planning prone
Our day at home
Like turning tones
Or banded zones
We'll balance bones
Oh boy, there's so much we can do at home

Then when it's done and Monday comes, We'll take it on the run
We'll have to wait, another date
Let's hope they make it late
Another round
There's so much we can do at home

You wouldn't believe all the things that I've seen
40 girls on the floor, making fun of the queen
Wax paper, Wax paper

You wouldn't believe all the people I know
But they're never around when I'm wanting to go
Wax paper, Wax paper

Wax paper, much later, Wax paper, Wax paper, oh...

You wouldn't believe all the places I've been
All the troubles that I never thought I'd be in
Wax paper, Wax paper

You wouldn't believe where I'm going tonight
Or the stories I'll tell when I'm back in the light
Wax paper, Wax paper

Wax paper, much later, Wax paper, Wax paper, oh...

I can feel the people hold me to the light
With their fingers poking through
Seeing what they want, details never bright
What am I supposed to do?

You wouldn't believe all the money I've spent
Or the places it went as I made my descent
Wax paper, Wax paper

You didn't believe what I told you before
And you're wasting my time always asking for more
Wax paper, Wax paper

Wax paper, much later, Wax paper, Wax paper, oh...
